Card fees are typically around £36 (the Apprentice card is free). Every card also requires a current pass of the relevant CITB HS&E test — Operatives, Specialist, Supervisors or Managers & Professionals, depending on the card.
Which card do you actually need?
In practice, most people working towards a trade start on a Red Trainee or Experienced Worker card while they complete their NVQ, then move onto the Blue Skilled Worker card once they hold a full NVQ Level 2. Progressing to Level 3 opens up the Gold Advanced Craft or Supervisory card, and Level 4+ management qualifications lead to the Black Manager card.
Renewing your card
Cards need renewing before they expire, which usually means sitting the HS&E test again if your last pass is more than two years old, plus evidence that your qualification is still current. Renewing in good time avoids being turned away from site.
