Skillbridge QualificationsThe CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test is a computer-based multiple-choice test, sat at a CITB Internet Test Centre (ITC), that almost everyone working on a UK construction site needs to pass before they can apply for a CSCS card. It isn't a qualification in itself — it's a knowledge check that proves you understand the basics of staying safe on site.
What's in the test?
The standard Operatives test is 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes to complete it. The questions are drawn from five knowledge areas:
- Working environment
- Occupational health
- Safety
- High risk activities
- Specialist activities
There are three versions of the test — Operatives, Specialist, and Managers & Professionals — and each follows the same 50-question, 45-minute, 90% pass-mark format. The Specialist and Managers & Professionals versions build on the Operatives content and add extra questions relevant to that level of responsibility, so which version you need depends on the CSCS card you're applying for.

You need to score at least 90% — that's 45 out of 50 questions correct — to pass. There's no partial credit for "nearly right" answers, so it's worth working through the official revision materials rather than guessing on the day.

The HS&E test currently costs around £23.50, booked directly through CITB. Prices can change, so it's worth checking the current fee when you book.
How long is a pass valid for?
A pass result is treated as current for CSCS card purposes for two years. If your test result is more than two years old when you apply for or renew a card, you'll usually need to sit it again.
How to prepare
- Use the official CITB revision materials — the question-and-answer book, or the CITB app for iOS and Android, which includes mock tests.
- Work through every sample question at least once, rather than only reading the theory.
- If you're studying towards an NVQ, a Site Safety Plus short course (like our Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment award) will cover most of the same ground and give you a head start.
- Book your test with enough time before you need your CSCS card — results can take a few days to register.
