NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) are assessed on the job, based on evidence that you can actually do the work to a national standard — not on exam results. The level tells you how much independent responsibility that evidence covers.

NVQ Level 2: skilled operative

Level 2 is the foundation trade qualification. It proves you can carry out the core tasks of your trade competently, generally working within a team and under some degree of supervision or direction. Most Level 2 NVQs on our site — bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, wall and floor tiling and others — are the qualification behind a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card.

NVQ Level 3: advanced craft or supervisory

Level 3 sits at two levels of the industry: advanced craft (a highly skilled tradesperson working with greater independence, complexity and precision) and supervisory/technical (someone directing the work of others as well as doing it themselves). A Level 3 NVQ is generally the qualification behind a Gold CSCS card, whether Advanced Craft or Supervisory.

Which one should you go for?

If you're new to a trade or don't yet have a portfolio of independent, unsupervised work, Level 2 is the right starting point — it's also usually a prerequisite before an assessor will consider you for Level 3. If you already have several years of hands-on experience and regularly work without close supervision, it's worth asking an approved centre for a skills scan to see whether you could go straight in at Level 3.
